Ikan air tawar tersebut termasuk dalam keluarga ikan dari genus Hydrolycus. Julukan vampire ia dapatkan karena dua buah taring bawah yang menjulang keatas, mirip taring vampire.
Hydrolycus memiliki beberapa jenis spesies, yaitu: H. armatus, H. scomberoides, H. tatauaia, H. pectoralis dan H. wallacei.

Genus ini tersebar di perairan sungai Amazon, Amerika Selatan. Menurut situs fishbase.org spesies terbesar dari genus ini adalah Hydrolycus Scomberoides yang dapat mencapai panjang maximum 1,17 meter.
Taringnya dapat disembunyikan dalam lubang yang berada diatas langit-langit mulut depannya. Jika ikan ini menutup mulutnya, maka taringnya tidak terlihat dari luar.
Paraya merupakan jenis ikan predator, ikan ini memiliki kecepatan yang luar biasa dalam menangkap mangsa dengan cara menusukkan kedua taring tajamnya ke tubuh sang mangsa. Hampir pasti mangsa yang tertangkap tidak akan bisa lepas.
